Wedding photography - Q&A's

These are some of the most commonly asked questions I’m asked by clients.
If there’s anything I haven’t answered that you’d like to know, feel free to give me a call.

What style of wedding photography do you take?
As a wedding photographer I take mainly informal photos to create a diary of your day. As well as pictures of the bride and groom and your friends and family, I try to capture all the details that make your wedding day unique, such as flowers, rings, shoes, table settings, and so on. Some people call it reportage photography, others documentary photography and some use the term photojournalism. I’m also happy to shoot the more traditional group pictures, and make them fun with a few creative touches if you like. I guess you could call it flexible photography!

Can I have group photographs with my friends and family?
Yes, you can have photographs with any family or friends you would like. If you do want some group shots, I find it useful to discuss this with you beforehand so I know exactly what you want, and can plan and take them with the minimum of fuss. It's good to think carefully about the amount of group shots you want as too many can compromise the reportage wedding photography. Of course, group shots don’t have to be formal. I like to keep the mood light-hearted and make them as fun as possible whilst to capture the real feelings of the day.

Can we plan the type of shots I want together?
Of course. I feel that the best way to find out what kind of photos you’re looking for is to talk about it face to face. About a month before your wedding day, we can meet up to discuss exactly what you’d like, any group shots you want and timings for the various aspects of the day. This is also the time for me to you to have your pre-wedding photoshoot.

You mention pre wedding photography. Is that an engagement portrait?
That's exactly what it is...plus a bit more. At our last meeting, about a month before the wedding, we go to a local location and I shoot a mini portrait of the two of you, which many people use as their engagement portrait as you get to choose 3 free 12x8 prints from this photoshoot. As well as giving you some wonderful pictures that are yours to kee, it helps you get used to being in front of the camera and also gives us the chance to get to know each other better so that you feel totally comfortable with me on the day.

Will you visit the venues beforehand?
Yes, I like to visit the venues so that I can meet the key people involved, am familiar with the layout and can find the best places for photography which helps everything run smoothly and ensures you get the best wedding photography possible. This visit can be done with or without you and many couples choose to co-incide this with their final planning meeting at the venue.

I'm camera shy, so I want a wedding photographer who is unobtrusive.....
As a recent bride myself, I understand how a wedding photographer needs to blend into the background. And apart from when I’m taking formal shots, you’ll hardly know I’m there. My forte is being in the right place at the right time and I’m always on the lookout for those special moments without getting in the way of the proceedings of the day.

Will you be there all day?
It’s up to you. If you like I can start by taking shots of the bride getting ready with friends and family, moving on to snap the groom waiting at the venue. Photography during the ceremony depends on whether the vicar or presiding officer is comfortable with it. I’ll then get any group shots done quickly, followed by 15 minutes or so with the bride and groom to take some relaxed shots of just the two of you. This also gives you a few minutes together to step back and take it all in. I’ll then stay as long as you want me to, whether it’s until the first dance or your final goodbyes.

My wedding’s not in Bristol – would you be prepared to travel?
Yes, although I am classed as a Bristol wedding photographer, I get asked to photograph weddings all over the UK, from Scotland, across to London and down as far as Cornwall. As a wedding photographer you have to be prepared to travel and I'm even lucky enough to be asked to photograph a number of weddings abroad each year.

How many of my wedding photographs do I get to see? Is it just the few in the album?
No, definitely not. I tailor my service to your requirements so you can choose to have all your wedding photographs on a DVD so you can print off as many as you want, or choose to have me print all your pictures for you, whatever you would like. However, as standard, whatever option you choose I put every picture taken throughout the day on a CD which is yours to keep.

Do you use a second wedding photographer?
I assess each wedding beforehand and if necessary I'll bring an assistant, who is a wedding photographer in their own right. They help organise group photos, set up equipment and take some extra informal shots. That way, you get every possible shot from the day.

How many photographs do you take during a typical wedding?
It all depends on how long I am there but I rarely take less than 300 pictures.

When do I get to see my wedding photographs?
You can expect to receive your CD of all the shots from your wedding approximately 2 weeks after the day. You can then choose which shots you’d like in the album. I also upload all your photographs online for your guests to view, although they won’t have access until you’ve had a chance to see them yourself.

How much do you charge?
Prices vary depending on your requirements. Take a look at the prices page.
